Chargers kick off NCAA DII Outdoor Championships with distance races

Three Hillsdale College women's track and field athletes got the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships started on Thursday, all in distance races, as the Chargers made the short trip to Allendale, Michigan for the meet hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Making her track and field national championship meet debut was freshman Liz Wamsley, who finished 14th in the nation in the 10,000m run with a time of 35:32.55. The freshman ran a smart race working her way through the field after starting near the back of the pack, and edging out G-MAC rival Alayna Ackley of Cedarville in a sprint to the finish line to secure her place and cap a strong first season outdoors.

In the 3,000m steeplechase, sophomore Margaret Scheske took 16th in her second appearance at the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships after qualifying in 2021 as well. Scheske crossed the finish line in 10:43.22, taking seventh in her heat.

Also making her national meet debut was sophomore Gwynne Riley in the 1,500m run, and Riley acquitted herself well in her first appearance in the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships, finishing 17th in a time of 4:30.60 to improve three spots on her seed entering the race.

Hillsdale's NCAA DII Outdoor Championships experience continues on Friday, as the Chargers' eighth seeded 4x400m relay team of Shura Ermakov, Josee Behling, Dakota Stamm and Zalonya Eby takes to the track at 8:10 p.m. looking to secure a spot in the Saturday final.
