Charger women's tennis team drops tight match to Wayne St., 4-3

The Hillsdale College women's tennis team took a second-straight loss to a Midwest regional power by a narrow margin on Sunday, falling to defending GLIAC champion Wayne St. in a tight 4-3 match.

The outcome turned on the doubles point, where all three competitive matches went in the Warriors' favor, including a 7-6 tiebreaker final at No. 3 doubles and a close 6-4 match at No. 1 doubles.

With that point in hand, Wayne St. was able to take the victory after the two squads split the six singles matches with three going to each team.

Canela Luna led the Chargers with a 7-6 (5), 3-0 win at No. 3 singles, Sophia Spinazze won 6-4 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Helana Formentin won a 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 thriller at No. 6 singles to give Hillsdale its three points.

The match closely resembled the Chargers' 4-3 loss to Ferris State last week, a tight affair with strong performances by both teams that turned on a lost doubles point and a couple of critical moments in singles play.

Hillsdale falls to 3-2 on the year and will look to get back on track next Saturday with a home match against another GLIAC squad, Michigan Tech, at 3 p.m.
