Chargers split duals with host Ashland, Saginaw Valley St. to kick off 2023

The Hillsdale College women's swimming team got back in the pool on Saturday after a long winter break, splitting competitive duals with host Ashland and Saginaw Valley State.

The Chargers took down a G-MAC rival in the Eagles, 153-53, and fell by a narrow 107-97 margin to Saginaw Valley State, a margin coming entirely from points from the Cardinals' divers.

In swim events, Hillsdale racked up seven victories in 11 races, led by sophomore Joanna Burnham, who took first in the 400 individual medley in 4:44.88, and out-touched teammate Emmalyse Dickhudt to win the 100 breaststroke as well (1:09.84), with Dickhudt taking second in 1:10.73.

Also taking first in multiple individual events was senior Marie Taylor, who won the 100 freestyle (55.53) and the 50 freestyle (25.10), while teaming with Caroline Holmes, Dickhudt and Julianna Weir to win the 400 medley relay (4:02.69) as well. Weir also took third in the 50 freestyle behind Taylor, in 25.43, and also swam with Lily Golladay, Leah Tunney and Megan Clifford on the runner-up 200 freestyle relay (1:40.76).

Clifford was an event winner for the Chargers in the 100 butterfly, in 58.44, with Sarah Pataniczek taking third behind her in 1:00.69, and Elise Mason won the 1,000 freestyle in 11:02.35, with Sarah Clark taking runner-up in 11:23.53. Holmes took runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:01.00) and Tunney finished runner-up in the 500 freestyle (5:25.80) as well.

Hillsdale will be back in action next week at the two-day Wisconsin-Stevens Point Invite on Friday and Saturday, looking for one final tune-up before the G-MAC Championships in February.
