Clifford sets second pool record of the season as Chargers beat Albion, 136-91

Hillsdale College's Megan Clifford continued an excellent start to the season as the Chargers women's swimming and diving team got back on track with a 136-91 dual meet win at Albion on Friday night.

Coming off losses to two nationally ranked teams earlier in October, Hillsdale put on a strong performance up and down the lineup to beat the Britons.

Clifford led the way for the Chargers with victories in both the 200 yd butterfly (2:07.81) and 200 freestyle (1:58.41). The sophomore broke the Albion pool record in the 200 fly, her second pool record of the season after breaking Hillsdale's pool record in the 100 butterfly on Oct. 8. Clifford also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay with teammates Marie Taylor, Caroline Holmes and Elise Mason (3:41.52). She led strong Charger performances in both of her event wins, as teammate Joanna Burnham took second (2:16.84) and Anika Fassett took fourth (2:20.35) behind her in the 200 fly, and Mason took third (2:02.16) and Emmalyse Dickhudt took fourth (2:08.76) behind her in the 200 freestyle.

Hillsdale also got an event victory from Holmes in the 200 backstroke, as the junior won in 2:12.00, just out-touching teammate Leah Tunney who finished second in 2:12.72. Sydney Slepian completed the Chargers sweep of the event, taking third in 2:20.40. Holmes also took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:17.38, with Tunney in third in 2:18.03 and Amy Mills in fourth in 2:23.84.

Mason got an event win for the Chargers in the 500 freestyle, taking first in a season-best time of 5:21.74, with Mills placing third behind her in 5:36.78. Sarah Clark also won for the Chargers, taking first in the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 11:18.67, ahead of teammate Sarah Pataniczek in second in 11:21.92 and Rotem Andegeko in fourth in 12:08.89.

The Chargers also won the 400 medley relay, as the team of Tunney, Burnham, Fassett and Golladay took first in 4:10.80.

Hillsdale went 2-3-4 in both sprint events. Taylor took second in both the 50 freestyle (24.79) and 100 freestyle (56.93), while teammate Lily Golladay took third in the 100 freestyle (57.15) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.76). Julianna Weir took third in the 50 freestyle (25.63) for the Chargers, and Pataniczek took fourth in the 100 freestyle (57.56).

The Chargers also got a 2-3-4 finish in the 200 breaststroke, as Burnham took second in 2:32.15, Dickhudt placed third in 2:34.10 and Andegeko took fourth in 2:39.25.

Hillsdale is off until Saturday, Nov. 12, when the Chargers travel to Findlay to take on their G-MAC nemesis, as well as Lewis, in a tri-meet at 2 p.m.
