Mills' career-high not enough as Charger women fall to Ursuline, 90-79

Mills' career-high not enough as Charger women fall to Ursuline, 90-79

For a half, Hillsdale College sophomore Sydney Mills couldn't miss.

Unfortunately for the Charger women's basketball team, Ursuline couldn't miss, either.

Hillsdale fell to the host Arrows 90-79 on Thursday night to drop to 2-16 overall and 2-16 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.

Mills was sensational from the jump, scoring the Chargers' first 17 points by herself and almost single-handedly keeping Hillsdale in touch with Ursuline, who led 26-24 at the end of the first quarter.

By halftime, Mills was up to 28 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the floor, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Unfortunately for the Chargers, the Arrows were similarly on fire, going 11 of 15 from 3-point range to finish the first half with 61 points and an 18-point halftime lead.

The Arrows cooled off in the second half, going 0 for 10 from 3-point range after halftime but for Hillsdale, the damage was already done. The Chargers cut the lead to as few as nine in the fourth quarter but the big halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome with just 20 minutes to do so.

Mills finished with 34 points and 13 rebounds on the night for her second double-double in a row and her sixth double-double of the season. Her 34 points are not only a career high, but also the most in a single game by a Charger women's basketball player since All-American Megan Fogt scored 41 at Walsh on Feb. 1, 2014.

Alongside Mills, senior guard Jaycie Burger also had a solid night, hitting four 3-pointers to finish with 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. Junior Lauren Daffenberg chipped in 10 points and four rebounds off the bench for the Chargers, junior Grace Touchette chipped in seven points, four rebounds and three assists and freshman Dani Salenbien added five points and five assists.

Hillsdale hosts 0-15 Ohio Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m. for its next game, looking to get back on track with a pair against the Fighting Scots before the season finale against G-MAC-leading Cedarville on Saturday, Feb. 27.
