Charger women can't overcome halftime deficit in 87-69 loss to Ohio Dominican

In the first, third, and fourth quarters of Monday's game at Ohio Dominican, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team outscored the host Panthers 63-59.

But the Chargers couldn't overcome a massive second quarter run by ODU, which outscored Hillsdale 28-6 and held the Chargers without a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the second frame, and that disparity led to a 87-69 road loss.

Hillsdale trailed just 20-17 after a layup by Sydney Mills on the opening possession of the second quarter, but that was as close as the Chargers would get the rest of the way. ODU responded with a quick 8-0 run to take a double-digit lead with eight minutes to play in the half, then, after another layup by Mills cut the lead to nine with 6:53 left in the half, the Panthers reeled off 17 straight points to push the lead to 26 and all but put the game away.

Freshman Dani Salenbien had a career-high 15 points and five rebounds to lead the Chargers, and sophomore Sydney Mills chipped in 12 points and 15 rebounds for her 11th straight double-figure scoring game and her fifth double-double of the season.

Junior Grace Touchette chipped in 10 points and seven assists as well for Hillsdale, and senior Jaycie Burger added nine points and eight assists.

Junior Lauren Daffenberg scored 10 points off the bench for the Chargers, knocking down two 3-pointers and moving past Makenna Ott for sixth on Hillsdale's career 3-pointers made list with 158.

The Chargers knocked down nine 3-pointers in the loss, but conceded 14 3-pointers to ODU, which went 14 of 28 from beyond the arc and shot 46 percent from the floor in the victory.

Hillsdale (2-15, 2-15 G-MAC) has two more games in a busy week, traveling to Ursuline on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Ohio Valley at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
