Six Chargers men's tennis players earn ITA Scholar Athlete honors

2022-23 NCAA DII ITA Scholar Athletes

The 2022-23 school year was another stellar campaign in the classroom for many on the Hillsdale College men's tennis team, a program with a long history of academic success to match its accomplishments on the court.

Six of Hillsdale's nine men's tennis players for the 2022-23 season received Scholar Athlete honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the organization announced on Tuesday morning. In order to receive ITA Scholar-Athlete Honors, an athlete must be an active member of their team and maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher for the 2022-23 school year. Sixty-six and two-thirds percent of Hillsdale's roster met that high bar, an impressive showing for the program.

Fourth-year player Tyler Conrad led the Chargers with his fourth-consecutive ITA Scholar-Athlete honor, while graduate Brennan Cimpeanu and junior Sean Barstow each received their third straight Scholar Athlete honor from the ITA. Juniors Samuel Clyde and Daniel Gilbert each earned recognition for the second-straight season, while freshman Lennart Kober also earned ITA Scholar Athlete honors.

While Hillsdale bids farewell to Cimpeanu and Clyde and Kober also depart for the 2023-24 season, Conrad, Barstow and Gilbert all return this fall and will form the experienced core of the Chargers' lineup as Hillsdale aims for a sixth-straight top four finish in the G-MAC and to contend for the conference crown. The three players have a combined 10 seasons of collegiate tennis between them entering 2023-24 and will look to lead a young team overall, including four new freshmen who join the program officially in August.
