Primary Insurance
All student-athletes at Hillsdale College are required to hold primary insurance while they are participating in any countable athletic activity. It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to ensure that the Hillsdale College Sports Medicine staff have their current primary insurance on file. If their current primary insurance is not on file, we will assume that the athlete does not have primary insurance and the athlete will be withheld from athletic activity until primary insurance information is obtained by the sports medicine staff.
Secondary Insurance
Hillsdale College provides a supplemental secondary insurance at no cost for their athletes. This insurance will provide coverage to the student-athletes for injuries resulting from Hillsdale College athletic activities. This insurance does not provide assistance for injuries resulting from unsupervised workouts, captain’s practices, open gyms, intramurals, or other similar functions that are unrelated to countable athletic activity. Our secondary insurance policy will provide coverage of medical bills after the bills have been submitted to the student-athlete’s primary insurance.
*The Hillsdale College Sports Medicine Staff does not receive the medical bills for every student-athlete - it is the responsibility of the student-athlete to obtain their medical bills and submit them to the Hillsdale College Sports Medicine Staff if they would like them submitted to our secondary insurance company for payment.*
*If you do not notify a Hillsdale College Sports Medicine staff member of your injury and choose to seek care on your own, we cannot guarantee payment for your bills through our secondary insurance company. You must notify a staff member before receiving any medical care if you plan to submit those bills for payment through our secondary insurance policy.*
International Student-Athlete Insurance
Hillsdale College athletics requires that international student-athletes obtain primary insurance through our athletic department. We will not accept any other insurance plans. As an international student-athlete, if you do not hold the primary insurance that we recommend, we cannot guarantee payment for your medical bills.
First Care Plan
The first care plan is an insurance plan that can be used as a primary insurance for student-athletes for athletically related injuries. This is not a plan that will provide coverage for unsupervised activities or illnesses. This plan is often purchased by our student-athletes whose primary insurance is Medicaid, a Health Share Plan, or a plan that only provides care close to their home so that they can receive health care in our area and in a timelier manner.
