Chargers' Leah Tunney named G-MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week for third time this season (Jan 17-24)

The Hillsdale College women's swimming and diving team has been dominant all season, with a perfect 11-0 dual meet record.

That dominance has been reflected in the G-MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week awards, and this week is no different. Junior Leah Tunney picked up her third weekly conference honor of the season and the Chargers' ninth in the 2021-22 campaign, the G-MAC office announced today.

The award marks Tunney's seventh weekly conference honor in her career at Hillsdale, after earning two each as a freshman and sophomore. The Mequon, Wisconsin native was a key performer in Hillsdale's victories over NCAA DIII 24th-ranked Calvin and Davenport last Friday to wrap up an undefeated dual meet season.

Tunney won three events, taking first in the 500 freestyle (5:12.57) and 200 freestyle (1:55.79) in close races. She also teamed with Cecilia Guadalupi, Sydney Slepian and Marie Taylor to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.54) in a photo finish ahead of the team from Calvin.

It's the latest honor in a decorated career at Hillsdale for Tonney, who's already won G-MAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2019-20 and G-MAC co-Swimmer of the Year honors in 2020-21 along with her seven G-MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week honors. In 2020-21, Tunney was first-team All-G-MAC in three different individual events.

A swimmer from Hillsdale has won the G-MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week Award all nine of the weeks that the conference has given it out in the 2021-22 season. Tunney and the Charger swim team travel to the Butler Invitational on Sunday for their final meet of the regular season. The G-MAC/MEC Championships begin in Canton on Feb. 16 with Hillsdale looking for its third straight conference crown.
