Freshmen impress as Charger women's swim team beats Indiana Wesleyan in season opener

The Hillsdale College women's swim team made its season debut on Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan, defeating the Wildcats 125-78 in its first official meet of the season.

Three Charger swimmers won both of their events – Joanna Burnham, Leah Tunney, and Marie Taylor.

In the very first event, the 200 medley A-relay of Holmes, Dickhudt, Clifford, and Taylor finished first by two and a half seconds ahead of Indiana Wesleyan (1:52.94).

Freshman Joanna Burnham made her college swimming debut with a win in the 200 IM (2:15.51), just out-touching teammate Cecilia Guadalupi by a half second (2:16.02). Burnham had another close win in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.73), just in front of freshman Emmalyse Dickhudt (1:11.99).

Junior Leah Tunney had a strong performance in the 200 freestyle, taking first by two seconds (1:58.97). Tunney also won the 100 backstroke (1:00.27), barely out-touching sophomore teammate Caroline Holmes by .26.

Junior Marie Taylor took first in both sprint events, winning the 100 freestyle by two and a half seconds (54.76) and freshman teammate Lily Golladay was second (57.23). Taylor also won the 50 freestyle (25.15), and Golladay finished one second behind for third (26.20).

Freshman Megan Clifford had her first collegiate win in the 100 butterfly by three seconds and was the only swimmer to go under one minute (58.92), senior teammate Anna Clark finished third by .3 (1:02.28). Clifford also had a strong swim in the 200 freestyle finishing second behind Tunney (2:00.96).

The Charger distance crew had tough competition from Indiana Wesleyan. Junior Sarah Clark finished second in the 1000 (11:14.18), and sophomore Sarah Pataniczek finished third (11:17.17). In the 500, Pataniczek came in second (5:25.92), sophomore Amy Mills finished third (5:31.57), and S. Clark finished fourth (5:33.05).
