Chargers fall to hot-shooting Walsh in 103-64 defeat

The Hillsdale College women's basketball team saw its six-game win streak come to a close on Thursday, as the Chargers couldn't cool off a red-hot Walsh team offensively in a 103-64 home loss.

The visiting Cavaliers shot 57.9 percent from the floor and 38.7 percent from beyond the arc, draining 12 3-pointers to pull away early in the contest. Hillsdale trailed 17-8 after the first quarter, but cut the Walsh lead to six early in the second. The Cavaliers responded with a 31-point quarter, led by five made 3-pointers from senior Morgan McMillen in the period, to take a 19-point lead into halftime, then added 34 more points in the third quarter to pull away for good.

Senior Grace Touchette led the Chargers with 16 points and four assists, shooting 60 percent from the floor, and freshman Caitlin Splain hit four 3-pointers off the bench to finish with 12 points as well.

Freshman Peighton Nelson chipped in nine points on 4 of 7 shooting for the Chargers, junior Sydney Mills finished eight points, eight rebounds and two steals, and freshman Carly Callahan added five points, four assists and six rebounds.

The Chargers were outrebounded 47-24 and struggled inside against the much taller Cavaliers, getting outscored 56-18 in points in the paint.

Hillsdale (8-5, 5-2 G-MAC) is still in a solid position in conference play despite the loss, and will look to bounce back with another important home clash on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Malone, another team in contention for one of the six G-MAC tournament bids up for grabs at the end of the year.
