Chargers sweep 2024 Hillsdale Invitational

The Hillsdale Chargers Shotgun Team competed in their own invitational shoot on February 24th, 2024. Held at their own Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, the event featured over 100 competitors from seven colleges and high schools. Schools with participants in attendance included Olivet University, Purdue University, Grace College, Ferris State University, Michigan State University, and University of Michigan. Offered disciplines were 100 Trap Doubles, 50 Trap, 50 Skeet Doubles, and 25 5-Stand.

The day was cold and somewhat windy, but the Chargers pushed through and shot great scores. In Trap Doubles, Hillsdale broke 483/500 targets and finished first ahead of second place Grace and third place Purdue. Contributing scores were from junior Joshua Corbin (98/100), freshman Luke Johnson (98/100), sophomore Leif Andersen (97/100), junior Gavin Drill (95/100), and senior Jackson Sokel (95/100). Corbin and Johnson tied for the high score of the event with Andersen finishing third. Freshman Madeline Corbin (93), senior Ida Brown (89), and senior Jessica Strasser (89) earned 1st through 3rd women's category respectively.

Hillsdale posted a perfect score in American Trap, 250/250, including seven athletes that posted 50/50: senior William Stuart, both Corbins, junior Kyle Fleck, junior Jonathan Calabrese, Sokel, and Strasser. They bested Olivet and Purdue by 12 and 18 targets respectively. Stuart, Calabrese, and Fleck finished 1st through 3rd in the men's category with Madeline Corbin and Strasser tying for first in women's with Olivet's Whitley Fowler.

With a score of 241/250, the Chargers again took first place in Skeet Doubles. Joshua Corbin posted the event's lone perfect 50/50 earning him first individual. Johnson and sophomore Jordan Sapp both hit 48 targets, tying for men's second, along with Madeline Corbin who shot the highest score of any female competitor. Brown and freshman Ava Downs both broke 47 with the former taking second female and the latter taking third.

The final event of the match was 5-Stand. Hillsdale's near-perfect 122/125 earned them first place team. Fleck and Drill both hit 25/25 to tie for first individual. With 24/25, Andersen, Johnson, and sophomore Davis Hay tied for third individual. Downs and Strasser tied for high woman with Madeline Corbin taking third.

Hitting 1096 out of a possible 1125 targets, the Chargers earned the top prize of first place team High Overall. Purdue finished second and Grace ended third. Joshua Corbin, Johnson, and Sokel earned first, second, and third individual overall with 219, 217, and 214 out of 225 respectively. Madeline Corbin took home high women's High Overall with 211 while Strasser and Brown won second and third.

"This was exactly the kind of performance that we want to have in the month leading to Nationals," said head coach Jordan Hintz. "Dealing with the tougher conditions, getting up early, and having to work throughout the event, we still performed just as we needed to. I'm incredibly excited to continue to show off what we can do. This team has the talent and skill to accomplish anything."

Hillsdale next travels to Columbia, MO from March 1-3 to compete in the ACUI/SCTP Spring Central Midwest Conference Championships.
