Charger men open outdoor season with solid showings at both Winthrop, Cedarville

After a short break following the conclusion of the indoor season, the Hillsdale College men's track and field team was back in action with two meets this weekend, splitting its squad to attend both the Adidias Winthrop Invite in Rock Hill, South Carolina and the Yellow Jacket Invite in Cedarville, Ohio

Adidas Winthrop Invite

Facing off against tough competition that included multiple NCAA Division I schools, sophomore Sean Fagan was impressive for Hillsdale at the Adidas Winthrop Invite this weekend. Fagan placed in three events, taking third in the 400 meter hurdles (55.17) and the 110 meter hurdles (14.78), while teaming with Benu Meintjes, Maliq Brock and Ian Calvert to run a 3:22.39 and take second in the 4x400m relay for Hillsdale.

Hillsdale also got a standout showing from freshman Oliver Samuelsson in the 200m dash, as the sprinter from Iceland took fourth in a collegiate best time of 22.12. Meintjes also took 13th in 22.51 in the event.

In the field, freshman Kyle MacBeth got off to an impressive start for Hillsdale in the javelin, throwing 54.71 meters to take second in his first collegiate meet with the Chargers.

Cedarville Yellow Jacket Invite

The bulk of Hillsdale's team traveled to Cedarville, where Hillsdale put up a solid showing in the Yellow Jacket Invitational. 

The Chargers had two event victories, as sophomore Charlie Andrews cleared 1.95 meters in the high jump to take first place overall, and the 4x400m relay team of Jamahl Burke, Joseph Ritzer, Justin Doughty and Sean Hoeft won in 3:39.00.

Hillsdale also took third in the 4x100m relay, with the team of Jacob Schmidt, Burke, Dagur Einarsson and Mason Dooley running 43.43, and Einarsson took fourth in the 100m dash in a time of 11.46.

Also placing for Hillsdale in the meet were Doughty, who took fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:02.93), Ritzer, who took sixth in the 200m dash (23.33), Jonathan Burton, who took sixth in his first javelin competition with a throw of 39.26 meters, and Joshua Nichols, who took eighth in the long jump (5.95 meters).

The Chargers next compete in the Oliver Nikoloff Invite in Cincinnati, Ohio, beginning on Friday, April 1.
