Charger men's golf team takes 15th place at Doc Spragg Fall Invitational

The Hillsdale College men's golf team improved its overall score in every round at the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

But the Chargers couldn't make a move out of 15th place, finishing with a 300-299-298-897 for the tournament, held at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.

Senior Josh Davenport led the Chargers by tying for 32nd place individually and carding a 71-77-73-221 for the invite. Davenport shot a tournament-leading -2 on par-3s and was atop the leaderboard for much of the first round thanks to seven birdies.

While a difficult second round kept him from remaining near the top of the pack, the senior showed significant improvement from his performance at the season-opening Kiawah Invite and has plenty to build on as the fall season continues.

Teammate Gerry Jones, Jr. finished in 39th place, two strokes behind Davenport, thanks to a consistent 75-74-74-223 scorecard. Jones shot Hillsdale's best or second-best score in all three rounds for the invitational, the only Charger to do so in all three rounds.

In his 2021-22 debut for the Chargers, junior Darragh Monaghan tied for 55th, carding a 76-75-76-227 as well for the Chargers, senior Drew Gandy rebounded from a first-round 81 with rounds of 74 and 75 to finished tied for 67th with a total of 230, and freshman Oscar Darlington posted a 78-76-78-232 to finish tied for 74th.

Hillsdale has a week off to regroup before its next event, the Kyle Ryman Memorial Invite hosted by Tiffin at the Mohawk Golf and Country Club, beginning on Oct. 4.
