Chargers open season with 15th place finish at Kiawah Island Invitational

The Hillsdale College men's golf team struggled to get on track against a tough field at the season-opening Kiawah Island Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

Uneven opening and closing rounds kept the Chargers from making a push up the leaderboard, as Hillsdale shot a 307-291-302-900 for the invitational to take 15th overall as a team.

Junior Gerry Jones Jr. had the best performance among the Chargers, overcoming an opening 77 with a three-under 69 in the second round and closing with a 73 to finish three-over at 219 and tied for 48th place.

Freshman Filippo Reale was close behind with a consistent performance for the Chargers, carding a 74 in all three rounds to finish with a six-over 222 and in 59th place.

Freshman Oscar Darlington and sophomore Will Verduzco each carded a three-round score of 231 to finish tied for 70th for the Chargers, and senior Josh Davenport shot a 235 over three rounds to finish in 74th and round out the Hillsdale lineup.

The Chargers will be back in action on Sept. 20 at the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational in Findlay, Ohio, looking to build off the bright spots from the Kiawah Invitational, particularly a second round where four Hillsdale golfers shot or tied their best score of the weekend and carded a 291.
