Chargers' Michael Herzog is G-MAC Football Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 2-9)

Chargers' Michael Herzog is G-MAC Football Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 2-9)

Hillsdale College senior tailback Michael Herzog burst on to the scene last season in a big way, earning first-team All-G-MAC honors with 940 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Now in his final season in a Chargers uniform, Herzog has raised the bar even higher in 2023.

The G-MAC named Herzog its Football Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 2-9 this afternoon, Herzog's first weekly honor this season and the second in his career.

Hillsdale was unable to pull the upset at undefeated Tiffin this Saturday in a 35-21 loss, but Herzog had stellar production against a tough defense. The senor tailback rushed for 146 yards and all three of Hillsdale's touchdowns on 27 carries, averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

It's the latest in an impressive start to the season for Herzog, who already has four 100-plus yard games in six contests this season. Herzog ranks second in the G-MAC to date in rushing yardage with 628 on the ground, and his nine rushing touchdowns have not only surpassed his production from all of last season, but also lead the G-MAC as well. Herzog also ranks first in the G-MAC in scoring with 54 points, and in all-purpose yards with 1,019, or 169.8 per game.

Now, Herzog has his sights set on becoming just the ninth player in Hillsdale College history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season. The senior needs 372 yards in the Chargers' final five games to reach the mark, and become Hillsdale's first 1,000 yard rusher since All-American David Graham in 2019.

Herzog and the Chargers will look to get on track with a return home this weekend to face Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. eastern time.
