Men's Tennis Earns 6-1 Win Against Hillsdale

WSU improved to 3-0 at home on the season with the triumph.

DETROIT -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad (5-4 overall) collected a 6-1 win on Friday night over visiting Hillsdale College (3-5 overall) inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

DOUBLES
The Warriors garnered the doubles point to open the match for the third consecutive contest.

Both WSU victories in the category came via 6-0 shutouts.  The fifth-ranked tandem of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) downed HC's Aidan Pack and Sean Barstow, while Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) and Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) defeated Henry Hammond and Daniel Gilbert.  Those match-ups occurred at the first and third flights, respectively.

For Drenth and Grey, it was their seventh doubles triumph in nine attempts during 2024.

The Green and Gold's other nationally ranked team (13th) of Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) dropped a 6-3 decision to Ellis Klanduch and Tyler Conrad at the No. 2 position, but the Warriors had already captured the opening point with the other two results.

SINGLES
The Warriors nearly swept the night, but ended up with five singles wins to secure the 6-1 victory.

Drenth finished first at the No. 2 spot.  He posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Conrad to improve to 8-0 at the singles position this year.

Grey was next to complete his match, as he notched a 6-4, 6-2 win against Pack at the first flight.  The German has won six of his eight matches at the No. 1 position thus far in 2024.

Claiming a 6-2, 6-3 triumph vs. Klanduch was Spicer at the third flight.  His win served as the clinching point for WSU on Friday.

Over at the No. 5 spot, Hill secured matching 6-4 set wins to down Hammond.

Mikkelsen and Gilbert played in what was the tightest contest of the match, as the affair was the only one to play three sets.  After falling 6-4 in the opening set, Mikkelsen rebounded for a strong 6-3 win in the second.  The two combatants played a 10-point super-tiebreaker, which also needed more than 10 points to find a winner.  The Warrior senior emerged on top with thrilling 12-10 decision to end the festivities inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

The Chargers' lone point came at the No. 4 spot, where Barstow defeated Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) in straight sets.  Those scores were 6-1 and 7-6 (7-5).

UP NEXT
Wayne State will host sixth-ranked University of Indianapolis on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.  Sunday's affair will be the third time this season, and first time in Detroit, that the teams have met.  In fact, it will also be the first time since at least the 2003-04 season that the Greyhounds will be playing WSU in a true road match.
