Pioneers and Chargers duel on Friday

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University softball team began its doubleheader against Hillsdale on Friday (Feb. 9). Game one went to the Chargers, while the Pioneers were leading the second contest before a pause was called.

Tusculum (3-4) will finish game two against Hillsdale at 11:30 a.m., followed by a neutral contest between the Chargers and Lees-McRae at 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers are scheduled to play the Bobcats at 3:30 p.m. to finish out the day.

Game 1: Hillsdale 3, Tusculum 1
Danielle Jason broke up the no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth as the Pioneers were struck out 15 times by All-American pitcher Joni Russell.

Hillsdale finally broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, despite having at least two runners on in the first four frames.

Jason singled on a two-out pitch in the bottom of the sixth as TU's first hit, advancing to second on a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Chargers tacked on two runs in the seventh as the difference behind four-straight hits to lead off.

Claire Smeltzer extended her hitting streak to a seventh game with a leadoff double in the bottom half of the frame. Abby Hunter pinch ran and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two out, Riley Hope fought off nearly 10 pitches to reach on a single, which scored Hunter from 60 feet away.

Ireland Cavanaugh (1-2) went four innings, tossing 90 pitches in the loss. She allowed seven hits, one unearned run, and three walks, while striking out five. Natalie Spaitis came in to finish the contest, throwing 25-of-35 strikes in her three-inning stint. She relented four hits and two earned runs but struck out a pair of Chargers.

Game two of the doubleheader was halted due to increased precipitation at Red Edmonds Field.

At the time of suspension, the Pioneers were leading 10-0 with one out in the third. Tusculum had racked up 13 hits, including four doubles, with four walks.

In the circle, Nyah Vogel had only relinquished one hit across the 11 batters faced.
