Women's Basketball Falls to Hillsdale in Sunday Afternoon Game

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team dropped a nonconference game to the Hillsdale College Chargers by a final score of 89-55 on Sunday, Nov. 28 in Hillsdale, Mich. at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena. With the loss, the Lakers overall record sits at 1-3.

The game was tied at two after the opening minute of play but the Chargers offense would take over play, building an 18-2 lead over the Lakers in the first quarter. The Lakers would go on a six point scoring run in the closing minutes of the first quarter but the home team held a 25-10 lead after the first ten minutes of the game. 

Hillsdale continued to control play in the second half as the Chargers outscored the Lakers 24-15 to lead 49-25 at the half. Senior forward Makenzie Bray led the Lakers with eight points through the first half.

Freshman guard CeCe Hacker opened the second half with a three pointer for the Lakers and Bray followed with a jumper to post a strong start for the Lakers. Lake State pulled within 19 points of the Chargers (49-30) within the first minute of the third quarter. 

However, the Chargers would not let the Lakers pull any closer as the home team scored nine of the game's next 11 points. Hillsdale held a 73-38 lead at the end of the third quarter. 

The Lakers would outscore the Chargers, 17-16, in the final quarter but would not be able to overcome the lead built by Hillsdale. Junior forward Kelly Olthof led the team with seven points and six rebounds in the final ten minutes of the game while sophomore guard Jozie Bontrager scored two three-pointers in the fourth quarter for the Lakers. Hillsdale would take the game by a final score of 89-55. 

Breaking Down the Game:

Bray led the Lakers in the game with 14 points as she went 7-for-13 from the field and also recorded four rebounds for LSSU. 

Olthof had a career-game as she posted her first collegiate double-double with 12 points against the Chargers and a team-leading 13 rebounds in the game. It marked new single-game career-highs in both points (12) and rebounds (13) for Olthof. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 33.3 shooting percentage, going 20-for-60 in the game. On the other end of the floor, the Chargers went 33-for-71 in the game to total a 46.5 shooting percentage. Hillsdale outrebounded the Lakers in the game, 46-37.

The Lakers will open conference play on Thursday, Dec. 2 as the team hosts the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers to open the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) season. The Lakers and Rangers will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
