Charger women get off to promising start in Olivet College Comet Open

The Hillsdale College women's cross country team kicked off the 2022 season just the way they were hoping for at Thursday's Olivet College Comet Open.

The Chargers put on a strong performance in the 5K race held at Broadway Acres Golf Club in Charlotte, Michigan. While team scores were not kept at the early-season meet, if they had been, the Chargers would have easily won, placing six of their 12 runners in the top 10.

Sophomore Liz Wamsley led the way with a runner-up finish in 18:47, just two seconds behind the race winner from Albion. Teammate Gwynne Riley, a junior was also close behind in third place, in 18:53.

Junior Meg Scheske took fifth in 19:11.30, and sophomore Vera Thompson finished in sixth (19:28.80) as well for the Chargers. Natalie Martinson placed 11th in 20:07.50 and Brynn Edison took 12th in 20:21.30 as well for Hillsdale.

The Chargers will be back in action next Saturday, September 10, with the whole squad heading to the Calvin Knight Classic in Grand Rapids to compete.
