Senior middle hitter Allyssa Van Wienen is picking up right where she left off for the 18th-ranked Hillsdale College volleyball team this season.
Van Wienen closed the first week of the 2021 campaign by earning G-MAC North Division Player of the Week honors, following a dominant performance at the Ferris St. Invite this past weekend.
It’s the 11th G-MAC Player of the Week honor Van Wienen has collected in her illustrious career as a Charger, an impressive number spanning five seasons of play in the conference for the 2019 All-American and G-MAC Player of the Year.
Van Wienen helped lead the Chargers to a 2-2 record over the weekend, a solid result considering that three of the four teams Hillsdale played over the weekend either were ranked in the AVCA NCAA DII top 25 entering the tournament, or are now ranked this week coming out of it.
For the weekend, Van Wienen finished with 53 kills on a .348 hitting percentage and 22 total blocks – leading the Chargers in both categories. The senior’s consistency stood out across the weekend: she posted double-digit kills and at least five blocks in every match Hillsdale played at Ferris State. For her performance, she was the only Charger named to the All-Tournament team.
In the G-MAC, Van Wienen currently leads the conference in blocks per set (1.38) and points per set (4.38) and is also in the top 10 in hitting percentage (.348) and kills per set (3.31) after one week of play.
Those numbers hold up nationally, as Van Wienen is currently tied for 24th in blocks per set and tied for 49th in points per set across all of NCAA Division II so far.
Van Wienen is back in action this weekend looking to continue her hot start and help the Chargers to more team success as Hillsdale heads to West Palm Beach, Florida to play in the Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach on Friday and Saturday.
