Chargers Celebrate Senior Day With 3-1 Win over LSSU

Box Score

Erin Holsinger played Saturday's match as if it was her last at home, which by some definition, it was anyway. And the Chargers got a much-needed win as a result.

Holsinger set a new season-high with 17 kills, including 8 in the fourth set, as Hillsdale College defeated Lake Superior State University 3-1 Saturday afternoon in the final regular season match of 2016 at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.

The Chargers are now 14-9 overall and are back to 6-6 in GLIAC play.

Holsinger, along with fellow seniors Sam Siddall and Kyra Rodi, were honored before the match as part of Senior Day, the last home regular season match of the season. Holsinger then went out and had a match to remember, as she was merciless against the Lakers, racking up a .438 hitting percentage to go along with 1 solo block and 3 block assists.

Rodi also played a strong match with 7 kills and 4 block assists while Siddall set a new season-high with 4 kills.

Like so many matches they've played recently, this one was much closer than a 3-1 final score would indicate. The Chargers won each of the first two sets by the razor-thin margin of 26-24. The Lakers came back to win set 3 by that identical 26-24 score. However, in set 4 the Chargers found a comfortable offensive rhythm and dominated from the start of a 25-11 win.

Hillsdale hit .520 as a team in that fourth set compared to .000 for the Lakers.

Sophomore Kara Vyletel had 11 kills and 8 digs for the Chargers, while sophomore Paige VanderWall added 9 kills, 6 digs, 3 assists and 3 total blocks in a solid all-around performance. Taylor Bennett handed out 41 assists, and Taylor Wiese was strong in the back with 17 digs. Emily Lachmann, Jackie Langer and Holsinger each delivered 2 service aces.
