Lakers Top Chargers for First Time Since 2008

November 10, 2012 - For the first time in more than four years, the Hillsdale College volleyball team lost to Grand Valley State when the two teams met for the 2012 regular season finale Saturday afternoon in Allendale.

The Lakers prevailed over the Chargers 3-1, ending a five-match losing streak to Hillsdale that had dated back to the 2008 regular season. Hillsdale conlcudes this regular season with a 15-14 overall record, and 11-7 in the GLIAC.

It appears the Chargers will be making a return trip to Allendale for the first round of the GLIAC Tournament Wednesday night. Thanks to head-to-head matchups, Grand Valley State has earned the #3 seed, while the Chargers take the #6 spot thanks to its win over Wayne State earlier in the season.

The Chargers got off to a goos start in Saturday's match, winning the opening set 25-22. But the Lakers took over from there, winning the final trhee sets by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-15.

Junior Caitlin Kopmeyer recorded a double-double for the Chargers, leading the team with 10 kills and 14 digs. Senior Lauren Grover added nine kills, hit .333 and led the team with four block assists. Freshman Haylee Booms powered her way to six kills with a .312 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Alexis Waugh (pictured) had a team-high 22 assists, while freshman Marissa Owen had 11 assists at setter.
