Three Chargers go undefeated at home women's tennis invite

In their final event of a brief fall season, the Hillsdale College women's tennis team finished in fine fashion on Saturday, going 18-7 and posting the best record of the three teams in attendance at their annual home Charger Invitational.

Playing host to two of Hillsdale's toughest competition for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference title, Walsh and Tiffin, the Chargers looked strong on the court, posting a combined 6-4 record in singles and doubles matches against the Cavaliers, and a combined 12-3 records against the Dragons.

Three Charger players posted undefeated records on the day, led by junior Hannah Cimpeanu. Cimpeanu won both of her matches at No. 1 singles, beating Walsh's Katharina Razum 6-2, 6-1 and Tiffin's Jade Riley 7-5, 6-2, and also teamed with Sarah Hackman to win a 6-2 match over Walsh and a 6-3 match over Tiffin at No. 1 doubles.

Sophomore Sophia Spinazze also went 4-0 for the Chargers, beating Walsh's Clara Drasch (6-3, 6-4) and Tiffin's Shea Foster (6-1, 6-1) at No. 3 singles, and teaming with freshman Canela Luna to beat both Walsh (6-1) and Tiffin (6-1) at No. 3 doubles.

Luna also won both her matches at No. 5 singles, beating Maria Kaclova of Walsh 6-4, 6-3 and and Dominique Matich-Reynolds of Tiffin 6-1, 6-1 to give Hillsdale a third undefeated player on the day.

Two other Chargers finished the day with strong records and just one loss. Freshmen Julia Wagner and Ellie Chawner teamed up to win both their matches at No. 2 doubles, beating Walsh 7-3 in a tiebreak to take a 7-6 thriller and beating Tiffin 6-4. Wagner also picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jacqueline Kamps of Tiffin at No. 6 singles, and Chawner won two matches against Dragons players at No. 7 singles, beating both Kamps (6-2, 6-2) and Bailey Young (6-0).

With fall competition over, Hillsdale will train through the winter and pick back up in February. The Chargers won back-to-back G-MAC titles in 2018 and 2019, and are still the defending G-MAC champions after Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 spring season. They'll aim to claim another conference crown in the spring 2021 season.
