One step closer to a successful title defense.
The Hillsdale College women's tennis team defeated the University of Findlay 4-0 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament semifinal match on a sunny, but windy day, on the campus of Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The Chargers, 15-2 on the season, will face Walsh University to decide the 2019 conference champions. The match is expected to start around 1:30 p.m. Central Time Saturday.
As is typical in tournament play, the match was played until one team mathematically clinched the victory. The No. 1 doubles match wasn't completed, because the other two doubles matches ended first.
Hannah Cimpeanu and Sarah Hackman, both First-Team All-Conference players, teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. The No. 3 doubles duo of Kamryn Matthews and Madeline Bissett picked up a 6-2 win to notch the doubles point for the Chargers.
Hillsdale won the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches to clinch the victory. Senior Corinne Prost motored her way to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. Matthews, undefeated in her postseason career, kept up that streak with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Junior Katie Bell finished off a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.
