Kamryn Matthews Wins First G-MAC Player of the Week Award

Junior Kamryn Matthews joined a growing club of Charger women's tennis players named the best in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in a given week.

Matthews, for the first time in her terrific career, was named the G-MAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday afternoon. The award was announced and chosen by the conference office.

She became the fifth different player from this year's team to be named G-MAC player of the week, joining Katie Bell, Sarah Hackman, Hannah Cimpeanu and Madeline Bissett. Matthews joined that company thanks to a nearly perfect week on the court for the undefeated Chargers.

Matthews improved her overall record to 8-0 on the season with four wins on Friday and Sunday. She picked up a 6-1, 6-1 singles win over Illinois-Springfield and teamed up with Bassett for a 6-3 doubles win Friday.

Two days later, she blanked her opponent from Purdue-Northwest 6-0, 6-0 while playing No. 3 singles, two flights up from her typical No. 5 spot. She also moved up with Bassett to No. 2 doubles and had no trouble with a 6-1 win.

In 2018, Matthews set a Hillsdale College single-season record with 30 total wins, combining singles and doubles play.

She is a native of Midland, Michigan.
