Charger women's swim team has breakout performance at Depauw Invite

This weekend the Hillsdale swim team traveled to Depauw University for a two-day invitational meet against Depauw and Butler University. Almost every swimmer had season best times.

Freshman Caroline Holmes set three new Depauw pool records in the 200 freestyle (1:54.21), 200 backstroke (2:04.67) which was also a lifetime best time by four seconds, and the 100 backstroke (58.38). Holmes continued her success by winning the 200 IM (2:10.09) and splitting a lifetime best time in the 200 freestyle B-relay (24.83).

The Chargers had a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 freestyle. All three swimmers were within one second of each other. Sophomore Leah Tunney lead the way (5:14.52), sophomore Madison Pyhel was second (5:14.89), and sophomore Sarah Clark was third (5:15.50).

The 200 backstroke saw another 1-2-3 finish with Holmes first, senior Katherine Heeres second (2:07.01), and Tunney third (2:08.50). Heeres continued her success with a third place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:56.38).

Sophomore Sarah Clark swam a lifetime best time and won the 1000 (10:42.81). Pyhel finished in a close second place and season best time by 13 seconds (10:43.40), and Tunney was fourth (10:58.64). A. Clark had another first place finish in the 100 butterfly (59.02). Pyhel had a strong swim in the 200 butterfly and finished second (2:11.99), and A. Clark finished in a close third (2:12.23).

Freshman Cecilia Guadalupi won the 200 breaststroke (2:27.97) and junior Maddie Breay dropped over seven seconds for a season best time and second place (2:30.21). Guadalupi scored more points by finishing third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.66).

In the 100 freestyle sophomore Marie Taylor finished second (53.70). Taylor had another second place finish in the 50 freestyle (24.53), and senior Emma Rao finished fourth (24.76).

The 400 freestyle A-relay of Taylor, Tunney, Holmes, Heeres finished first (3:34.60).

The 200 medley A-relay of Heeres, Boyle, Rao, and Taylor finished second by .09 (1:48.73).

The 400 medley A-relay of Tunney, Boyle, Pyhel, Heeres, second (3:59.90).

The 200 Freestyle A-relay of Taylor, Rao, Tunney, Guadalupi finished second (1:38.32).

Hillsdale is off until March 30 when it travels to Canton, Ohio for the four-day G-MAC/MEC Championships. The Chargers are the reigning team champions and will be looking to defend its crown and also bring home some individual hardware as well from the season-ending meet.
