Freshmen make mark for Charger swim team at first virtual meet of season

The Charger swim team competed in their first-ever virtual meet this Saturday at the McAvoy Natatorium. The virtual meet is part of a six-meet series hosted by the Collegiate Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America, the Fall Virtual Cup. Time results from the Chargers and other teams across the country will be compared later in the week.

The 200 freestyle B-relay of Emma Rao, Rebecca Briskey, Carissa Henderson, and Katherine Heeres took first (1:41.97) to kick off the meet, and the A-relay of Leah Tunney, Madison Pyhel, Clark, and Marie Taylor were close behind in second (1:42.60).

Three Chargers were under two minutes in the 200 freestyle. Freshman Caroline Holmes won her first individual college event (1:59.06), sophomore Leah Tunney took second (1:59.23), and freshman Cecilia Guadalupi finished third (1:59.25) in a tight race.

Holmes and Tunney went 1-2 again in the 50 backstroke with Holmes taking first (28.07), and Tunney second (28.71).

Sophomores took the 50 butterfly with Anika Fassett first (27.15), and Madison Pyhel second (27.81).

Guadalupi earned her first collegiate victory in the 50 breaststroke (32.34), and junior Taylor Boyle took a close second (32.96).

Sophomore Marie Taylor won the 100 freestyle by over 3 seconds (54.31), and junior Carissa Henderson took second (57.84).

Three Chargers were under 5 minutes in the 400 IM with freshman Amy Mills taking her first victory (4:51.69), sophomore Madison Pyhel a close second (4:52.72), and senior Katherine Heeres third (4:59.48).

Hillsdale will compete in another virtual meet on Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. at home. The Chargers' first official in-person competition against other teams is on Nov. 7, when Hillsdale travels to the University of Findlay to swim against the Oilers and Lewis University.
