Chargers’ Sydney Mills earns second G-MAC Player of the Week (Feb. 6-13) honor

Chargers’ Sydney Mills earns second G-MAC Player of the Week (Feb. 6-13) honor

In a big weekend for the Hillsdale College women's basketball program's postseason hopes, Sydney Mills came up big for the Chargers.

And the senior is now getting recognition from the G-MAC for the second time this season for her performance, as the conference office announced that Mills has received G-MAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors on Monday afternoon. It's the third weekly conference honor of Mills' career.

Mills was impressive in a 67-59 win over Lake Erie on Saturday that moved the Chargers closer to their first G-MAC Tourney appearance since 2019, putting up a 21 point, 15 rebound double-double for her 10th double-double of the season, and shooting 53.8% from the floor.

While it came in a close loss, Mills also had an excellent game on Thursday against Walsh, putting up 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for the Chargers.

For the season, Mills is averaging 10.8 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game, her third straight season of averaging a double-double. Her rebounds per game not only leads the G-MAC but ranks 15th nationally at the NCAA DII level, cementing the two-time second-team All-G-MAC player's spot as one of the nation's top rebounders.

Earlier this season, the senior from DeWitt, Michigan became just the 20th Charger to reach 1,000 points for her career, and now has 1,095 entering this weekend's contests. Mills is also rapidly closing in just the third player in Hillsdale women's basketball history to reach 1,000 rebounds for her career, as she sits in third place all time with 950 with three regular season games remaining. Mills is planning on using her extra season of eligibility from the Covid-19 pandemic next spring, and will challenge Hillsdale's all-time record of 1,146 rebounds set by Sandy Skaisgir in 1991.

Hillsdale needs two wins in its final three games to guarantee a spot in the G-MAC Tournament, and begins a tough road stretch with a trip to Malone for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off on Thursday.
