Chargers open Puerto Rico trip with 86-61 victory over P.R.-Rio Piedras

The Hillsdale College women's basketball team didn't let a slow start trip them up in their first of two games on a trip to Puerto Rico on Thursday.

The Chargers outscored Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 50-31 in the second half, rolling to a 86-61 victory over the Jerezanas.

Hillsdale trailed after the first quarter, 15-10, but rapidly heated up offensively in the second, scoring 26 points to take a six-point halftime lead. The Chargers continued to pour it on in the second half, hitting eight 3-pointers and shooting 55.8% from the floor in the second half.

Five players scored in double figures for the Chargers, led by senior Arianna Sysum, who finished with 15 points and six rebounds, and sophomore Carly Callahan, who had 15 points along with four rebounds and three assists as well.

Seniors Grace Touchette and Maverick Delp each chipped in 11 points for the Chargers, and Caitlin Splain added 10 points as well. Senior Sydney Mills just missed giving the Chargers a sixth player in double figures, finishing with eight points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore point guard Peighton Nelson chipped in six points and six assists as well for Hillsdale, which was able to get solid playing time for nearly everyone on the roster in the victory.

With the win, the Chargers are back at .500, 6-6 overall, and will wrap up its games in Puerto Rico on Friday at 11 a.m. against Puerto Rico-Bayamon.
