Ashland's Shooting Sends Chargers to First Loss

Box Score

The Hillsdale College women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2014-15 season to a familiar foe Thursday evening.

The Ashland University Eagles put on an impressive long-distance shooting display in an 81-57 win over the Chargers at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena. Hillsdale is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the GLIAC, and will stay home to face Lake Erie College at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Eagles shot the ball extremely well from 3-point territory, burying 11 of their 18 shots from behind the arc, while holding Hillsdale to a 3-for-17 mark from the same spot on the court. Ashland's 33-9 edge in points scored from 3-point shots, a margin that exactly equaled the game's 24-point final scoring margin. Hillsdale missed all nine of its 3-point attempts in the second half, and shot just 27 percent from the field in the game's final 20 minutes.

One bright spot for the Chargers was the play of freshman guard Michele Boykin. She scored a career-high 10 points, to go along with 4 rebounds in 17 minutes. While her scoring was welcome, she played with a speed and pace that made her stand out in this contest.

Hillsdale did outrebound Ashland 39-37, including grabbing 15 on the offensive boards.

Senior Megan Fogt had 12 points and 6 rebounds, while freshman Allie Dittmer came off the bench to produce 6 points, 6 rebounds, a career-high 4 blocks and 3 steals in 19 effective minutes on the floor.
