January 12, 2013 - In a battle of two injury-ravaged teams, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team picked up its first win since Dec. 1 in a 70-56 decision over Ohio Dominican University Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena.
The Chargers are now 5-8 on the season and 2-8 in conference play while the Panthers fell to 1-9 in the GLIAC with the loss.
Hillsdale was faced with putting together unusual lineups due to five players on the roster being unavailable due to injury. But stepping up to fill the void was sophomore Kadie Lowery, who put together the best game of her two-year collegiate career.
Scoring from a wide variety of spots on the floor, Lowery set a new career high with 20 points on 8-for-18 shooting from the field. Playing with teammates not used to looking for their offense, Lowery was aggressive in shooting the basketball and looked for holes in the Panther defense often. She also contributed well in other ways, getting four rebounds, five assists and a steal in 31 minutes of action on the court.
Lowery helped engineer an offense that struggled mightily out of the gate. The Chargers missed 15 of their first 18 shots, but she popped in a couple of 3-pointers, as well as nice-looking pull-up shots from the foul line area to help get Hillsdale on track on the offensive end of the floor.
The two teams shot similarly from the field, but Hillsdale had 12 more attempts at the basket thanks in part to 14 offensive rebounds. Although sophomore Megan Fogt was held to just four points in the game, she grabbed 10 rebounds including five on the offensive side of the floor to keep possessions alive for the Chargers.
Sophomore Brooke Borowski found the range on her shot in the second half and helped put the game out of reach. She scored 12 points and made three 3-point baskets.
As a team, Hillsdale was 12-for-23 from behind the 3-point arc, with Lowery leading the way with four, and Ashlyn Landherr making her only two attempts from that part of the floor.
Freshman Kayla Geffert, making her first collegiate start, set a career-high in scoring for the second game in a row with 10. Junior Angela Bisaro collected nine rebounds for Hillsdale.
