Chargers dominate second day of Hoosier Collegiate Invitational

Chargers dominate second day of Hoosier Collegiate Invitational

Although they were not able to compete in the first day of the event due to the Klix Memorial Fundraiser Shoot at Hillsdale, about half of the Chargers Shotgun Team traveled to Warsaw, IN and the Kosko Shotgun Sports Complex to compete in the first annual Hoosier Collegiate Invitational. Held September 30th and October 1st, the total event consisted of 500 different targets between American Trap, Trap Doubles, Handicap, American Skeet, Sporting Clays, and a modified version of Bunker Trap, the last three of which were day two of the competition. Nearly 70 competitors from 8 different colleges were in attendance: Olivet University, University of Illinois, Concordia University Wisconsin, Ferris State, Hillsdale, Grace College, Indiana Wesleyan University, and Purdue.

Seven Chargers shot at the Invitational and all of them earned Sporting Clays accolades. Breaking 457 out of a possible 500 targets, the team of junior Joshua Corbin, sophomore Leif Andersen, senior Ida Brown, sophomore Davis Hay, and senior Jessica Strasser took 1st place overall above the second place Grace College with 434. Josh Corbin's 96/100 took 1st as an individual while Andersen's 94 tied him for second. Brown and freshman Madeline Corbin both hit 92 targets, highest amongst the ladies competitors, and freshman Ava Downs' 87 was good for third lady.

Hillsdale was also the first place team in American Skeet with the squad of Brown, Joshua Corbin, Hay, Andersen, and Strasser breaking 488/500 targets. Hay's perfect 100-straight earned him first place individual after a shoot off with fellow Charger Madeline Corbin who took second. Just a target behind with 99/100 was Josh Corbin and Strasser tied for second high lady with 97 targets. Grace College was the second place team with 458/500 total targets broken.

Finally, Hillsdale completed the three-event sweep with a 1st place finish in Modified Bunker. Brown's 46/50 earned her top overall competitor as well as high lady. Strasser's 43 was second lady and tied for second overall with Joshua Corbin. Downs earned third place lady with 40 targets broken. The Chargers total score of 205 bested second place Grace's 167.

The squad of Joshua Corbin, Strasser, Brown, Hay, and Andersen broke more targets on the second day than any other at the competition. Josh was the highest overall competitor of the day with Ida Brown not far behind in second and Madeline Corbin in third. The latter two were the first and second female overall competitors with Downs earning third.

"It was a really strong showing that proves our practice philosophy for this semester is working," said head coach Jordan Hintz. "The team is looking good going into the ACUI/SCTP International National Championships and our first intercollegiate conference championship of the semester. It's exciting to think about what's on the horizon."

There is a short turnaround for the Hillsdale Team which leaves October 3rd for the Cardinal Center in Marengo, OH for the Olympic-style collegiate Nationals and the Upper Midwest Conference Championships.
