Chargers win both High Overalls at Spartan Series Final Stop

The Hillsdale College Shotgun Team shot in their final National Sporting Clays Association open competition, the final stop of the Spartan Series, and shot the highest score in both the Sporting Clays and 5-Stand events. Held at the Detroit Gun Club, the event took place on September 23rd and featured 82 competitors.

Starting with 100 targets of Sporting Clays, the Chargers came out of the gate strong. Sophomore Jordan Sapp broke more targets than any other competitor, missing only the first target and ending with 99/100. He was also first in A Class and first among the Juniors. Tying for third HOA was junior Josh Corbin (96/100) who also tied for second in Master Class and finished as 2nd Junior. Seniors William Stuart and Jessica Strasser both hit 93 targets, tying them for first in B Class and giving Strasser high Lady. Sophomore Leif Andersen, just two targets behind, ended in third for both Juniors and B Class. With a score of 89/100, freshman Luke Johnson earned 2nd in B Class while fellow freshman Ava Downs and senior Jackson Sokel both hit 88, tying for third C Class and earning the former 2nd place Lady. Finishing 1st in D Class was freshman Alex Hoffman with 78 targets broken.

Also missing just a single target, Johnson hit 49 out of 50 in the 5-Stand event to earn High Overall, 1st C Class, and 1st Junior. Just two behind were both Corbins (Josh – tied 2nd Master and Junior, Madeline – 1st Lady, tied 2nd Junior) and Sapp (1st A Class, tied 2nd Junior). Senior Ida Brown's 44 won her 3rd high Lady and tied for 2nd in A Class. Stuart and juniors Kyle Fleck and Jonathan Calabrese all broke 45/50, tying them for third in B Class. Sophomore Davis Hay hit 46 targets, winning 2nd place C Class with Sokel getting 3rd just one target behind him. Finally, again taking first in D Class was Alex Hoffman, breaking 41 targets.

A handful of Chargers will next travel to Warsaw, Indiana to compete in the Hoosier Fall Collegiate Invitational. They will then head to the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio to shoot in the ACUI/SCTP International National Championships and Upper Midwest Conference Championships.
