Chargers' Drill wins a HOA award at NSCA Great Lakes Championship

On September 10th, the Chargers Shotgun Team traveled to Grand Blanc Huntsman's Club in Grand Blanc, MI to compete in the Great Lakes Championship, an open National Sporting Clays Association competition and one of the largest in the state. The team shot both the 100-target Sporting Clays main event and a 50-target 5-Stand event.

Hillsdale started the day with the main event. Faced with some tricky targets, scores were lower than normal across the board, but a handful of Chargers took home some awards. Junior Josh Corbin, sophomore Jordan Sapp, and freshman Ava Downs all broke 83/100 targets. Corbin finished second in AA class, Sapp won B Class, and Downs was the top scorer in C Class as well as second place Lady. All three tied for second place high Junior. Senior Jackson Sokel and junior Gavin Drill both shot 81 targets to finish second in C and B Class respectively. Just a target behind at 80, Senior Ida Brown and sophomore Leif Andersen tied for third in A Class and finished third in C Class respectively. Sophomore Sophia Bultema ended up second in E Class.

The 5-Stand event brought the biggest accomplishments of the weekend to the Chargers. Breaking 48 out of a possible 50 targets, Drill stood alone at the top of the scoreboard as High Overall and top Junior. Just a couple targets behind, Corbin (46/50) took first in AA Class and second Junior. Hillsdale's next highest scorer was junior Jonathan Calabrese, who finished first in B Class and the 3rd highest Junior with a score of 44. Sapp was second in B Class with 42 targets while junior Kyle Fleck's 41 was third in the same class. Breaking the same number of targets as Fleck, both Downs and Andersen tied for first in C Class with sophomore Davis Hay just behind for third. Again earning the bronze in A Class was Brown with 40/50 and Bultema took the top spot in E Class.

Hillsdale next looks toward the Spandau Oktoberfest Classic at the college's own Halter Center. This is an international-style shoot, something that Hillsdale has found immense success with in the last few seasons.
