Chargers Shotgun athletes kick off year strong with duo of NSCA competitions

The Hillsdale College Shotgun Team began the season with two open NSCA-registered sporting clays competitions: the Guerini Grand Prix at Island Lake (Aug 19-20) and the Chargers Classic at Hillsdale's own Halter Center (Aug 26). Hillsdale athletes earned a variety of accolades at both events and gathered momentum to carry on through the rest of the semester.

Junior Joshua Corbin started with a trio of impressive scores at Island Lake to take home several big prizes. His score of 185/200 in FITASC was good for third High Overall and top Junior while his 99/100 in Super Sporting bested all other competitors and earned him first both High Overall and Junior. Corbin swept the Junior podium after breaking 95/100 in 5-Stand, a score that also earned first place in AA Class. At the Chargers Classic, Corbin again took a High Overall honor, this time for Sporting Clays, also winning top Junior and first in AA Class. Freshman Madeline Corbin was second in AA Class and earned second place Lady as well.

Sophomore Jordan Sapp also had a successful Guerini Grand Prix, breaking 175/200 in FITASC and 97/100 in Super Sporting to take 1st in B Class FITASC, 3rd Junior FITASC, 1st in B Class Super Sporting, and 2nd Junior Super Sporting. With 83/100, Sapp tied for third HOA in Sporting Clays at the Chargers Classic, also finishing second in both B Class and (tied) Junior. For 5-Stand, he tied for third in B Class with a score of 35/50.

Nearly sweeping C Class at Island Lake, Jonathan Calabrese finished C1 and 2nd Junior in FITASC (177/200), C1 and Junior 3rd in Super Sporting (93/100), and tied for C2 and 3rd Junior in 5-Stand (92/100). Senior Jackson Sokel broke 166/200 in FITASC to take third in C Class at Island Lake. At Hillsdale, his performance was even more impressive, tying for 3rd HOA, winning C Class, and tying for second high Junior with 81/100 and again winning C Class as well as the Junior title in 5-Stand.

At the Guerini Grand Prix, senior Ida Brown won 3rd Lady in FITASC, first place A Class and Lady Super Sporting, and was the top Lady in 5-Stand. She was also the top score in A Class at the Chargers Classic Sporting Clays, finishing as the 3rd place Lady as well.

Senior Jessica Strasser broke 90/100 targets in Super Sporting at Island Lake to tie for third in B Class and take 3rd Lady. Senior William Stuart shot the same score to also tie for third in B Class. Strasser again took B3 in Sporting Clays at the Chargers Classic, but this time was the top Lady competitor. Stuart was second HOA at this event as well as the top B Class shooter.

Sophomore Sophia Bultema was the top E Class competitor at Island Lake's Super Sporting and 5-Stand as well as Hillsdale's Sporting Clays. At the latter event, junior Gavin Drill tied for B3 in Sporting Clays and was the top B Class competitor in 5-Stand, also winning 2nd place in the Junior category. Freshman Ava Downs also had a successful event, taking C2, 1st Lady, and tying for 3rd in Junior in the 5-Stand.

The Chargers' next competition is another NSCA-registered Sporting Clays shoot, the Great Lakes Championship, held at Grand Blanc Huntsman's Club on September 10th. They will then compete at the Spandau Oktoberfest Classic International-style shoot held at the Halter Center.
