Chargers shotgun team places 5th at 2023 ACUI/SCTP National Championship

The Hillsdale College Shotgun Team returned from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI)/Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Championship with a variety of accolades. The event took place from March 21-25 at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, TX. The Chargers competed in Division II against 19 other programs including schools like West Point and University of Kentucky. In total, over 750 athletes representing more than 70 schools participated in the shoot.

The Chargers shot American Trap and Trap Doubles in the rain on the 21st. Senior Woody Glazer started the week strong with a perfect 100/100 followed by juniors William Stuart (99), Jessie Strasser (98), and Jackson Sokel (98) with the final contributing score from freshman Davis Hay (98). The team score of 493/500 was just one target shy of the third-place finisher University of the Ozarks.

Hillsdale brought home the team bronze in Trap Doubles by beaking 472/500 targets. The squad was led by sophomore Jonathan Calabrese and freshman Leif Andersen, who both shot 96/100, followed by Glazer and sophomore Josh Corbin with 94 and freshman Jordan Sapp with 92.

Wednesday was Hillsdale's day for Skeet Doubles and American Skeet. In the former, the Chargers' score of 486/500 was just a single target behind Fort Hays State University and earned them second place as a team. Corbin and fellow sophomore Kyle Fleck both shot 98/100 in the event. Sapp and sophomore Gavin Drill hit 97 targets followed by Hay with 96.

In American Skeet, the team hit 494/500 targets tying them with Angelo State University for DII Team third place. Hillsdale started the shoot-off by tying with 9/10 in the first round and dominating the second round with 10/10 to Angelo State's 6/10. Glazer was again perfect in this event with Fleck breaking 100/100 alongside him. Corbin missed just a single target while Drill and Hay were down only two and three respectively.

Super Sporting was the only event that the Chargers shot on Thursday. Breaking 470/500 targets, they found themselves again tied with Angelo State for third but fell just one target short in a two-round shoot-off. Glazer continued an incredible performance with another 100-straight, an impressive feat on any sporting course. Corbin's 96 was the team's next highest score with Stuart (92), Andersen (91), and Drill (91) rounding out the squad.

The final competition day for Hillsdale was Sporting Clays. A challenging course and difficult conditions held the team down to 393/500. Corbin and Calabrese finished with 81/100 while Sokel broke 79 targets and Andersen and Sapp both had 76.

The 25th was a day for shoot-offs and awards. Glazer incredibly found himself in 6 different shoot-offs between team and individual events. He earned silver medals in American Trap and Super Sporting alongside the aforementioned team placements. Corbin finished 3rd in Skeet Doubles with freshman Sophia Bultema getting silver in C Class for the event. Fleck was awarded the title of High Combined Skeet as well.

The Chargers finished the event in 5th place Division II High Overall behind Fort Hays, Emmanuel College, University of Tennessee Southern, and Angelo State. This put them in 6th place at the competition regardless of division with only D1 National Champions Texas A&M ahead of all DII teams. For their efforts on the week, Josh Corbin was awarded a spot on the 1st Team All-American, his second consecutive All-American honor, while Woody Glazer, Jackson Sokel, and Jonathan Calabrese all were given All-American Honorable Mentions.

"This was a long week with a lot of tough competition," said head coach Jordan Hintz. "We came out of the gate reasonably strong and fell only a little short after other teams put up impressive scores. Division II has become by far the most competitive division within the last couple years and I'm proud of our 13 athletes going toe-to-toe with much larger programs.

"I'm especially proud of Woody for performing at an amazing level at his final event for Hillsdale. No other athlete broke 100-straight in 3 events and it is no doubt he will be remembered as one of the Chargers' most accomplished Shotgun athletes."
