Chargers celebrate senior day, look to G-MAC Tournament

The Hillsdale College softball team was unable to wrap up the regular season as it originally had planned on Sunday, as unforeseen circumstances forced the cancellation of a doubleheader with Findlay.

But the Chargers' senior day celebrations went on nonetheless, as Hillsdale held a short ceremony to honor its lone graduating player, first baseman Jenna Cantalupo, on Sunday at Johnny Williams Field.

Cantalupo, a two-year starter at first base and a contributor throughout her four seasons in a Chargers uniform, was recognized by her coaches, teammates and family, and did a ceremonial final walk of the bases with her team.

The cancellations mean that Hillsdale finishes the regular season at 31-18 overall, and runner-up in the G-MAC at 17-5 in conference play, earning the second seed for the upcoming G-MAC Tournament hosted by the University of Findlay at the Marathon Diamonds beginning on Wednesday, May 3.

While exact times and matchups have yet to be announced, it appears that the Chargers will open up with Ashland, which clinched the seventh seed with a split with Malone on Sunday.

Win or lose, Hillsdale will return to the field for a second matchup on Thursday, either a winner's bracket semifinal or an elimination contest depending on the outcome of the first game.

The tournament runs through Saturday, and the winner will earn both the G-MAC Tourney title and an automatic berth to the NCAA DII Tournament the following weekend.
