Charger softball team retains G-MAC lead with sweep of Ursuline

The Hillsdale College softball team kept its grip on the top spot in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference standings with a dominant sweep of host Ursuline on Saturday.

The Chargers used another excellent start from senior Dana Weidinger on the mound to roll to a 5-0 victory in the first game against the Arrows. Weidinger went all seven innings to pick up her 16th win and fourth shutout of the season, striking out seven, walking two and scattering four hits.

Elaine Townley and Emma Johnson each hit a solo home run to get the Chargers on the board in the top of the fourth inning, and Hillsdale tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the sixth on a Hailey Holtman RBI double and a two-run single by Renee Bielawa.

Holtman led the Chargers at the plate in the first game, going 3 for 4 with two doubles, and Natalie Stepanenko and Sam Catron each chipped in a double as well.

In the second game, Hillsdale jumped on Ursuline early with six runs in the top of the first inning, and never looked back in a 13-2 victory.

Townley hit a grand slam in the first inning for her second home run of the day and later added a RBI single, Holtman chipped in a three-run home run in the fourth inning, and Catron hit her 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the second for the Chargers.

Bielawa hit a RBI double as well for the Chargers, who finished with 12 hits in the second game, and Reagan Gensiejewski chipped in a double as well.

Camryn Olson (5-1) earned the win on the mound for the Chargers, striking out four and walking three in four innings, and Julia Sayles pitched an inning of relief, striking out one.

The Chargers are now 25-13 overall, 13-3 in the G-MAC, and one step closer to locking up the program's first regular season conference title since 1993 with six games remaining in G-MAC play. Next up for the Chargers is a home doubleheader against Ohio Valley on Monday at 3 p.m.
