Chargers rally in nightcap to split doubleheader with host Flagler

After a tough loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader at host Flagler, the Hillsdale College softball team came back with a vengeance in the second game to split with the Saints.

Deadlocked 2-2 with Flagler after the first two innings in game two, the Chargers broke the tie and pulled ahead for good with a three-run top of the third inning. Madison Stoner hit a two-run double to give Hillsdale the lead, and Emma Johnson hit a RBI single to tack on a third run and give Hillsdale a 5-2 lead.

After Flagler got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, Johnson came through again with a RBI double to help the Chargers pull out a 6-4 victory.

Sam Catron added a RBI single as well for the Chargers in the victory, and Renee Bielawa chipped in a double for Hillsdale. Erin Kapteyn picked up her third win of the season in the first complete game of her collegiate career on the mound for the Chargers, striking out five, walking one and giving up three earned runs in seven innings of work.

The win came after Hillsdale lost 6-1 to Flagler in the first game of the afternoon. The Chargers were held to five hits in the loss, and couldn't overcome an early 3-0 deficit.

Stoner scored Hillsdale's only run on a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, and Catron went 2 for 3 at the plate as well for the Chargers.

Camryn Olson took the loss for Hillsdale, striking out seven, walking eight and giving up four earned runs in five and a third innings. Julia Sayles pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief as well for the Chargers.

Hillsdale (11-10) finishes a three game series with the Saints with a single contest tomorrow, Thursday, at 11 a.m.
