Softball Team Finishes Regular Season With Back-to-Back Sweeps, Now Eyes G-MAC Tournament

Game 1 box score: Hillsdale 4, Alderson Broaddus 1

Game 2 box score: Hillsdale 10, Alderson Broaddus 0

An extra trip to West Virginia proved to be worth it for the Hillsdale College softball team.

The Chargers' games against Alderson Broaddus were originally meant to be home games on April 15. But the horrible spring weather forced the date and location for this doubleheader to be switched to Philippi, West Virginia, home of the Battlers.

The change didn't slow the Chargers down, as they won both ends of the twinbill by scores of 4-1 and 10-0, finish the regular season with a record of 20-14 overall and 14-8 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The wins mean Hillsdale has clinched the #4 seed in this week's G-MAC Tournament. The Chargers will face #5 seed Trevecca Nazarene at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Athletes in Action complex in Xenia, Ohio.

Freshman pitcher Erin Hunt powered her way to her 14th win of the season in the opener, going all seven innings with 12 strikeouts, second-most she's had in a game this season. Although the Battlers outhit Hillsdale 9-4, Hunt was able to limit the damage of those hits, while the Chargers made the most of their opportunities.

Kelsey Gockman had an RBI single, and Victoria Addis had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that loosened up what had been a tight 2-1 game.

Addis drove in two runs, and Katie Kish had a double and a run batted in. Freshman Emma Johnson also doubled in a pinch-hitting appearance.

Hillsdale exploded for five runs in the second inning, and finished off the 10-0 win in five innings due to the NCAA's run rule. The Chargers tacked on two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to wrap up their 20th win of the season.

Freshman Madison Stoner had the best offensive game of her young career, going 3-for-3 with a double and five runs batted in. Sophomore Erin Gordon scored three runs while Kish was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Addis tripled and drove in a run and scored another.

Freshman Natalie Stepanenko also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run scored. Gockman scored two runs and Amanda Marra had a hit and a run batted in.

Sophomore Dana Weidinger went all five innings, allowing just two hits in picking up the victory.
