Florida Trip Ends With Pair of Wins for Chargers

Game 2 box score: Hillsdale 7, Pitt-Johnstown 6

The seven-day stay in Florida ended on a positive note for the Charger softball team Saturday, as it won both of its games in Clermont.

In the opener, the Chargers shut down Kutztown in a 5-1 victory. In the second game, Hillsdale survived a seventh inning rally by Pitt-Johnston to post a 7-6 victory. Hillsdale returns north with a 6-6 record on the season.

Freshmen Natalie Walters and Erin Hunt teamed up on the game one win Saturday, with Hunt turning in a dominant performance with eight strikeouts in four innings of work.

Hillsdale scored once in each of the game's first five innings for its offense. Juniors Katie Kish and Amanda Marra each went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while freshman Emma Johnson and senior Kelsey Gockman went 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Sophomore Carlin MacDonald-Gannon also had a two-hit game, which included a double and scoring once. 

Sophomore Sam Catron launched a two-run home run in the first inning of the win over Pitt-Johnston to energize the Chargers. Kish and Marra recorded additional two-hit games, with Marra driving in two. Birthday girl Jessica Taylor made it a day to remember by going 2-for-2 with a run scored. 

Freshman Natalie Stepanenko also celebrated a birthday on Saturday, and she was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring twice.

Sophomore pitcher Dana Weidinger got the win with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings on the mound.
