Hillsdale Drops Pair of 1-run Games at Florida Southern

Game 1 box score: Florida Southern 2, Hillsdale 1

Game 2 box score: Florida Southern 1, Hillsdale 0

The Charger softball team played the Florida Southern College Moccasins as close as you can in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader in Lakeland, Florida.

Hillsdale lost both ends of the twinbill by scores of 2-1 and 1-0, falling to 4-4 on the season. Florida Southern played its 20th and 21st games of the season on this day and is now 16-5 overall.

The Chargers got a pir of outstanding pitching performances by two freshmen who fans will come to know well in the present and future. In the opener, freshman Natalie Walters pitched all six innings, scattering six hits while allowing just one earned run.

The team's lone run in the 2-1 loss came via an RBI single by senior Kelsey Gockman, scoring junior Amanda Marra to put the Chargers on top 1-0 in the top of the third inning. Marra and junior Katie Kish, both hitting over .500 on the season, were 2-for-3 in game one.

Game two saw another impressive performance turned in by freshman pitcher Erin Hunt. She also pitched the distance, going six innings with six strikeouts while allowing only two hits and two runs. A terrific outing, given the opponent and experience level.

The Moccasins scored their only run in the fifth inning, on a play where the Chargers were able to record an out, but not before the game's only run was scored.

Hillsdale outhit Florida Southern 8-2 in the second game but stranded seven runners on base.

Freshman Emma Johnson continued a terrific start at the plate in her career, notching two hits for Hillsdale. Junior Jessica Taylor also went 2-for-3 while sophomore Victoria Addis was 2-for-2 with a triple.
