Chargers Storm Into Postseason With Sweep of Lourdes

Game 1 box score: Hillsdale 8, Lourdes 0

Game 2 box score: Hillsdale 12, Lourdes 2 (6 inn.)

The Charger softball team completed a successful regular season Tuesday night, and now turns its focus to making a postseason run.

Hillsdale swept Lourdes University 8-0 and 12-2 in a non-conference doubleheader in Sylvania, Ohio. The Chargers enter this weekend's GLIAC Tournament with an overall record of 26-10.

Senior pitchers Sarah Grunert and Sarah Klopfer took turns starting, pitching four innings while the other came on in relief. Grunert got her first save of the season in the opener, and like Klopfer before her, won her 13th game in her start.

Sophomore outfielder Brittany Mahan set a career-high with 3 RBI, getting a single and a run scored. Freshman Amanda Marra was 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Danielle Garceau had a single, drove in a run and scored a run.

In game two, the Chargers outhit the Gray Wolves 15-4 and used a four-run sixth inning to trigger the NCAA's run rule, which ended the game after Lourdes failed to tighten the margin below eight in their half of the sixth.

Junior Bekah Kastning hit her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot that countered a two-run home run by Lourdes in the bottom of the second. Grunert later hit a home run of her own, her fifth as well.

Freshman Katie Kish racked up a career-high three runs, going 3-for-3 in the win. Grunert, Haley Lawrence and Marra each had three hits and Kastning was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and two runs scored.
