Chargers, Cavaliers Split Saturday Twinbill

Game 1 box score: Hillsdale 5, Walsh 3

Game 2 box score: Walsh 3, Hillsdale 2

While much of the GLIAC Saturday schedule was derailed due to brutal early-April weather, the Charger softball team was able to get in both of its games at Walsh University, winning the first and losing the second.

Thanks to home runs from Sarah Grunert and Cassie Asselta, Hillsdale took the opener 5-3. In the second game, the Chargers left 10 runners on base in a frustrating 3-2 loss. Hillsdale is 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the GLIAC.

In game 1, both teams matched the other's scoring through the first three innings. Hillsdale scored once in the top of the first and twice in the top of the third, only to be matched by the Cavaliers in the bottom half of each of those innings.

The Chargers broke through with two in the fourth when Grunert singled home Katie Kish, and junior Bekah Kastning followed with an RBI double.

Grunert won her seventh game of the season and 20th of her career by tossing six innings with five strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Senior Sarah Klopfer came on to record the save by throwing a perfect seventh inning.

Kastning was 2-for-4 while Asselta continued her great play at the dish with her two-run home run.

In game 2, Hillsdale outhit Walsh 9-6 but was unable to capitalize on numerous opportunities to score.

Freshman Amanda Marra piled up a career-high three hits to lead Hillsdale. Kastning had a single, a run driven in and a run scored while senior Julia Kosco had a hit and drew two walks.
