Chargers men set personal bests at VertKlasse Meeting

The Hillsdale College men's track and field team had several athletes set personal bests in warmer weather in High Point, North Carolina at the VertKlasse Meeting this weekend.

The competition at the meet, hosted by NCAA Division I High Point, seemed to bring out the best in the Chargers. Indoor All-American Ben Haas threw a personal best in the shot put, with a mark of 14.57 meters, to place 16th, and also took 17th in the hammer throw with a toss of 50.23 meters.

Also in the field, freshman Connor McCormick won the B flight of the pole vault with a collegiate best mark of 4.72 meters, and high jumper Charlie Andrews tied for fourth in the event with a clearance of 1.93 meters.

On the track, Hillsdale had several solid finishes in the hurdles. Freshman Colsen Conway ran a personal best in the championship heat of the 110m hurdles, placing 12th in 15.19 meters, and also took second in the B heats of the 400m hurdles with another personal best of 54.42. McCormick also placed eighth in the 400 hurdles in a time of 58.21, and John Baldwin took 11th in 58.46.

Also in the B heats of the 110m hurdles, sophomore Cass Dobrowolski ran a new personal best of 15.45 in the event to take 11th, adding to a new personal best and 25th place finish in the javelin that Dobrowolski also achieved this weekend with a mark of 42.91 meters.

In the 400m dash, Benu Meintjes placed 11th in the championship heats for the Chargers, in 49.49, and teammate Maliq Brock took 12th in 50.27. Both Meintjes and Brock also ran on Hillsdale's fifth-place 4x400m relay team, which finished in 3:24.30.

Hillsdale will travel to another big meet this coming weekend as the Chargers head to Champaign, Illinois for the Fighting Illini Challenge on Saturday, April 8.
