Small contingent of Charger men make big impact at Doug Hansen Open

The Hillsdale College men's track and field team sent just a small crew to the Doug Hansen Open, hosted by Saginaw Valley State on Friday night.

But that limited group made an impressive showing at the meet which included multiple NCAA Division I squads.

One standout for the Chargers was thrower Ben Haas, who continued a standout sophomore season with strong showings in two events on Friday. Haas won the weight throw with a NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark of 18.59 meters in the event, while also finishing third in the shot put with a throw of 15.58 meters as well against strong competition in both events.

On the track, two juniors earned runner-up finishes for the Chargers. Sean Hoeft placed second in the 800m run for Hillsdale with a time of 1:56.59, his best-ever mark indoors, while Benu Meintjes took second in the 400m dash with a time of 48.98, one of the fastest marks by a G-MAC athlete in the event to date.

Sophomore Richie Johnston took third in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:37.05, his personal best in the event, and Dagur Einarsson finished fourth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.07, just a hundredth of a second off of his personal best, as well.

The Chargers will be back in action with a full squad next Saturday at home, as they host the annual Wide Track Classic in the Biermann Center.
