Charger men start 2023 with solid showing in home tri against Ashland, Findlay

The Hillsdale College men's track and field team got back into the swing of things with a big indoor home meet on Friday coming off of the winter break.

The Chargers welcomed in two G-MAC powerhouses in Ashland and Findlay and stood up well against tough competition, posting several notable results.

Hillsdale pulled out two event victories on the track, with sophomore Maliq Brock winning the 400 meter dash in 51.59 for the Chargers, just ahead of freshman Seth Jankowski in third place (52.49).

In the longest distance race of the night, junior Alex Mitchell carried over the momentum from a solid cross country season with a victory in the 3,000m run, in 8:55.42, with teammate Isaac Waffle placing third in 8:57.16 in a tight race.

Hillsdale had a strong showing across the board in mid-distance and distance events, with Richie Johnston taking second (4:26.69) and Ross Kuhn taking third (4:26.82) in the mile run, and Sean Hoeft taking second (1:57.58) and Micah Vanderkooi third (1:58.62) in the 800m run.

The Chargers also ran well in hurdles events. Freshman Colsen Conway took second (56.94) and teammate Connor McCormick took third (59.74) in the 400m hurdles for the Chargers, and Conway also took third in the 60m hurdles (8.54) as well.

In the field, sophomore Ben Haas had a strong performance, finishing second in the shot put with a big personal best of 15.85 meters, as well as taking third in the weight throw with a distance of 17.39 meters.

Sophomore Cass Dobrowolski also earned a runner-up finish with a 1.98 meter clearance in the high jump for the Chargers, and Charlie Andrews took fourth with a clearance of 1.88 meters as well for Hillsdale.

It's a solid first showing of 2023 for the Chargers, who will be back in action next Friday for the Hillsdale Winter Classic against teams from the tri-state area, with events beginning at 3 p.m.
