Titles are on the line once against as the Hillsdale College Track and Field teams travel to Findlay University this Friday and Saturday for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Charger women are the two-time defending G-MAC Champions indoors, having edged Tiffin for the title in the final event in 2020, and winning by a more comfortable margin over the Dragons in 2021.
There's potential for a third-straight title, as Hillsdale is strong in several events. Hillsdale has one of the top thrower crews in the conference including the top two seeds in the weight throw in freshman Katie Sayles and Nikita Maines, as well as eighth-seeded freshman Averi Parker. Both Maines and Parker are also seeded highly in the shot put as well.
Defending G-MAC long jump champion Emily Gerdin also is seeded second in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump and could pick up critical points as well.
The Chargers also have strength and depth in the running events. Hillsdale is one of the top two seeds in both relays, the 4x400 and the DMR. A strong core of athletes, including 2021 G-MAC 400m dash champion Dakota Stamm, Zalonya Eby, Reese Dragovich and Liz Wamsley are all highly seeded in individual events as well.
Although Hillsdale will be a contender, there are several strong challengers, including nationally ranked Findlay, G-MAC newcomer Ashland, and perennial contender Tiffin. Further down the list, Cedarville's depth in the distance events makes them a dangerous dark horse as well.
On the men's side, Hillsdale will be looking to bring home individual championships and improve on a fourth-place finish in 2021, though the addition of 2021 national champion and powerhouse Ashland to the conference will make that task tougher than ever.
The Chargers have several athletes who are seeded highly in events and should have strong placements this weekend. Returning All-American Ben Raffin, seeded third in the pole vault, leads the way as he looks to add to his 2021 G-MAC Outdoor title in the event.
Sophomore Joshua Nichols is the second seed for the Chargers in the triple jump as well, while Sean Fagan (60m hurdles), Benu Meintjes (400m dash), Jamahl Burke (400m dash) and Oliver Samuelsson (200m dash) are all seeded in the top eight in their respective running events.
Hillsdale is the defending G-MAC champion in the 4x400m dash on the men's side and, while the Chargers will struggle to repeat that feat with the second-seeded team in the country in the event, Ashland, competing for the title, Hillsdale should still be in line for a strong finish with all four members of that title-winning team from 2021 returning.
