Humes, Thomsen earn first-team indoor track and field All-G-MAC honors

Press Release

Two men's track and field athletes who won numerous titles and rewrote the Hillsdale College record books have added another honor to their substantial resumes.

Joseph Humes and Ryan Thomsen were named first team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference athletes for the men's indoor track and field season in a press release today, Thursday.

Humes added to a sterling legacy on Feb. 29 at the G-MAC Indoor Track and Field championships in Tiffin, OH, winning the 3,000 meter run (8:31.25) for the Chargers to earn his seventh individual G-MAC title across cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field competition.

The senior twice earned All-American honors in cross country, is the Hillsdale College indoor record-holder in the mile, and had qualified to run in the national championship meet in March in the mile before the remainder of the NCAA season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thomsen, also, dominated on the way to a conference title in the heptathlon at the G-MAC championships in February, resetting a school record (5,157 points) and claiming the conference title in the event for the second straight year, while qualifying for the national championship meet as well.

Along with its two champions, Hillsdale also had several more all-conference honorees.

All four members of the runner-up 4x400 relay team (3:23.48) -- Ian Calvert, Benu Meintjes, Jacob Schmidt and Adam Wade -- earned second team honors from the G-MAC.

John Baldwin, the school record holder in the 60 hurdles, also made the second team for the Chargers for his runner-up finish behind Thomsen in the heptathlon (4,786) at the G-MAC Championships.

Three athletes earned third-team honors for the Chargers. Ian Brown was named to the third team thanks to his third-place finish in the 60 hurdles (8.16) at the GMAC Championships, while distance runners Jack Shelley (mile, 4:24.78) and Adam Wier (5,000 run, 15:07.63) also made the team with third place finishes in their events.

Hillsdale's track athletes will not get a chance to continue their season into the spring with outdoor competitions, but the Chargers left quite a mark on the program with just their winter accomplishments, and will look to the 2020-21 school year as the next chance to get back on the track.
